THE BREAD

By: HAMZA HASSAN SHEIKH

The bread was as round as sun, moon and the earth. Every round thing was made to rotate around its orbit. All was a matter of a circle and every round thing had to rotate in a circle, so like all other things, the bread too was moving around its orbit. Whether ancient times or modern world, as the moon and the sun shone daily on horizon same as the bread kept on being made.  As the moon and the sun changed their shapes, same as the bread too changed its shapes; sometimes full, half or even sometimes quarter while sometimes totally disappeared from the horizon but none of these things ever changed their orbits and kept on revolving around their moons and the suns. The same as the bread, the earth too kept on changing its shapes due to mountains, seas and earthquakes but it never left its orbit and remained in a revolution. Like all these things, life too was in a circle, revolving in its orbit and whenever it left its orbit, it was ended.

The shapes of the bread kept on changing with time like rectangular, circular and triangular but round shape was having an authenticity and were found everywhere in the world though the material and taste varied from place to place; some people used wheat and maize while some used flour of pulses and grains but the eaters of wheat-bread were in majority.

It was a small town where people belonging to different statuses were living. They were very nice and decent people; supportive to each other in every up and down of life. They were very simple; void of jealousy, hypocrisy and meanness; the reason to bring them closer to each other and sharer of the pains. Therefore, they were happy and prosperous; having no concern with the doings of each other and everyone was busy in his work and life. Though void of all worldly abuses and being pure and decent people of the society, yet they depended on one another for their livelihood. There, the life was like a circle, revolving around its orbit with a specific speed. There was living a doctor, a grocer, a policeman, an engineer, a priest, a laborer, a teacher, a singer, a musician and a merchant in this small town; not a small town but a complete world.

The priest was never going to earn a single penny if there was no death or birth in the town. Though the birth was a matter of happiness but death always brought a message of grief and sadness. They never wished death for each other but if there was no death in the town, the priest was on hunger. The only grave-digger in the whole town had nothing to do except digging the graves, and his bread was totally dependent on the number of dying people. If there was no death, there was no bread to fill his belly. He never wished for any death in the town – but without any death, he had to pass many days without food. The doctor was a kind-hearted and god-fearing person, but still his bread was dependent on the number of sick people. Though he never prayed for sickness of town men – if there was no sick person in the town then it was not possible for him to fill his belly. They always wanted to see each other prosperous and happy, but the circle of life could not run without any happy or sad event.

This circle of life kept them in a sequence and their lives revolved around an orbit. If there was peace in the town; no crime happened and no thief committed any theft then the policeman had to go hungry and the circle of his life dwindled with no certainty in his life. The crime rate was very low in the town; but sometimes, if any thief made his way towards this town, then the policeman was active and the circle of his life circulated. The engineer and the laborer were also dependent on the people of the town because if there was no building or repairing of any house, they were unable to circulate the circle of their lives in this globe. If they earned good and handsome amount, their children would go to school to get education and the teacher would be able to earn bread for himself. So the bread of the teacher was circling around the earning of the people otherwise the teacher was not able to fill his belly. If there was no wedding ceremony or any happy event in the town, then the musician and the singer would face hunger because without any happy event in the town, they could not earn their food. The life was a mixture of happiness and sadness, having both joyous and grieved moments and the bread of many people was concerned with both sad and happy events of life therefore human life had to rotate around both.

So all the people of the town were dependent on each other for their bread, even the people belonging to other circles of life like grocer, carpenter, cobbler, gardener, electrician, merchant, washer man, goldsmith, blacksmith, butcher and farmer were dependent on the prosperity of the society. If the people were not prosperous then they could not earn a single penny so all the professions of life were interlinked with each other and a happy and prosperous society was necessary for circulation of resources and sources among the people. All humans were concerned with bread to fill their bellies and the bread was as round as a sun, a moon and the earth. As the sun was the god of universe and the whole universe was revolving around it, the bread was the Goddess of the Humans and the lives of all humans were revolving around it.
