An Introduction :

Jamal Shah is a multi talented artist, dramatist, singer and producer. His powerful art in the media of painting, printmaking and sculpture portrays his concerns for the disadvantaged people around him. Jamal Shah obtained a Master’s Degree in English Literature from Baluchistan University, Quetta in 1978 and in 1983 he graduated from the National College of Arts, Lahore. He went on to obtain a Masters Degree in Fine Arts from the Slade School of Art, London.

In1984 he established the Fine Arts Department at the University of Baluchistan and headed the department for three years. In 1985 he formed the Artists Association of Baluchistan and became the Chairman of Artists Association of Pakistan.

Currently he is the director of HunerKada art academy in Islamabad which he founded in 1992 and Telenor Brand Ambassador, Television Productions (Hunerkada Productions). He is the recipient of numerous national and international awards for his work

فنون کے کسی ایک شعبے سے متعلق ،

کوئی فنکار ،اپنی سوچ ، مزاج اور موضوعاتی چناؤ میں اس قدر مختلف مختلف ہوتا ہے کہ جس کی تعداد نہیں بتائی جا سکتی ،

لیکن یہی عمل یا خصوصیت ہر فنکار کے کام میں تنوع

لے کر آتی ہے ،

لیکن  اس وسیع تر تعداد میں سے ہم خاص طور پر آرٹسٹوں کے  ایک گروپ کی دو حالتوں پر بات کرتے ہیں ،

وہ آرٹسٹ جنہوں نے مصوری کے ساتھ ساتھ دیگر فنون سے متعلقہ بہت سے مشاغل ،  دنیا بھر کے بے شمار مسائل پر سوچ بچار  اور ذمہ داریوں کو اپنے کندھوں پر اٹھایا ہوتا ہے ،

لیکن وہ اصل میں بنیادی طور پر مصور ہوتے ہیں یا ان سب سے وقت نکال کر مصوری کا شوق بھی پورا کرتے ہیں ،

اب ان دو گروپس

کے آرٹسٹوں میں سے ایک تو وہ ہوتے ہیں جو جب اپنے سٹوڈیو میں داخل ہوتے ہیں  ،

تو اپنی پریشانیاں مسائل اور دیگر ذمہ داریوں کا بوجھ اسٹوڈیو سے باہر کھونٹی پر ٹانگ کر اندر جاتے ہیں ،

اور اپنی کسی تخیلاتی تصوراتی دنیا میں داخل ہوکر اپنی جمالیاتی تسکین کا سامان کرتے ہوئے آپنا آرٹ تخلیق کرتے ہیں

جبکہ ایک آرٹسٹ وہ ہوتے ہیں جو اپنے تمام تر مسائل ،

سوچ بچار میں موجود تفکرات ،

سوال جواب ،

الجھاوے یہ سب کچھ ساتھ لے کر جاتے ہیں ،

رنگوں کے ساتھ ساتھ انہیں بھی اپنی پیلٹ میں شامل کرتے ہیں ،

اپنے ہاتھ اور برش کو اپنے خیالات کی خود کلامی کے حوالے کردیتے ہیں ،

جمال شاہ کا تعلق بھی اسی گروپ سے ہے ان کا کام بھی اصل میں ان کا سوشو پولیٹیکل مکالمہ ہوتا ہے ،

جسے ان کے اندر کا بنیادی فنکار ،

رنگوں لکیروں اور پرت در پرت اشکال پر مبنی ایک جمالیاتی پیرائے میں بیان کرتا ہے ،

مزے کی بات ہے ان میں کہیں فل سٹاپ نہیں ہوتا ،

ان میں ایسا محسوس نہیں ہوتا کہ آرٹسٹ نے یہ سوچ کر برش رکھ دیا ہو کہ پینٹنگ مکمل ہو گئی ہے ،

بلکہ وہ اس شعر کے مصداق ہوتا ہے ،

اے مصور تیری تصویر ادھوری ہے ابھی ،

اب یہاں تصویر سے مراد نظر آتی پینٹنگ نہیں بلکہ اس کے اندر موجود وہ مکالمہ ہے ،

جو جاری ہے ،

Ejaz Malik: Jamal shah'work.

In Kafka's work the metamorphoses is from man to a little creature called cockroache, but here in Jamal shah 'oeuvre it's Darwan's evolutive make up and manmade gods caprices trying to roosterize the humble innocent creature named as a punished MURGHA; a ROOSTERIZED man, that might fly, for it has the invisible wings and it might remain the same; as Darvin's subject  for it has submissive germs in his wings as well. But it might  one day use those wings and fly over everything.

Jamal shah! your eyes  are so much sharp and precise like the most meticulous surgeon who would not only know the ulcerative malady's dwelling, but would  remove it also with a magical coup de pinceau.

The tears flowing out of the eyes are mixed with the tears of sky as the pain is so overpowering in your work.

 Wait a bit my dear viewer! look around and seigh for an instance, and stare at it again, you would see much more of the hidden but transparent layers expressing other meanings.

But on the other hand,  at an other superficial level, as a tourist vision, a MURGHA, THE ROOSTERIZED man in tortured submissive posture, is  a ridiculous punishment, devised and introduced by the homemade clergy is the funniest image in your work. But hold Your breath! The pictorial work  opens up the deluge of tears, not in the eyes of tourist/hurried passer by, but in the heart of the dweller that observe it incessantly,  everyday every instance as sacred reward imposed by man, on man, and by the omnipresent establishment of our invisible state of mind, controlled by the most powerful chairs,  tables and what happens under the tables, orders, laws, rules, offices held fast by the aristocratic officeocrates.

The thunderstorm is cooled down by the celestial rain and terestrial submissiveness absorption that Jamal shah detest and howls loud  in his eye  opening  recent pictorial work that remains suspended in our hearts and heads as strong afterimage!

Jamal Shah: Dear EM, this is the best dissection a fellow artist can perform. I have been enchanted by the likes of Kafka, Camus and Sartre and feel indebted to their contributions to whatever clarity I have achieved in my thought as an image maker and ordinary citizen of our close to heart land and very melancholic and enigmatic soil. I feel understanding the mystique of this layered tapestry in the form of folklore , visual vocabulary and other forms of associations, intimately, requires several life times. It becomes a much bigger challenge when one is forced to situate oneself in the broader and beyond borders picture historically. Thanks a lot for the wonderful thoughts. Best, JS

آرٹ اور ادب کو ایکدوسرے کے بہت قریب آنا ہوگا تب جاکر ۱۹ صدی کے اوائل میں فرانس یا دیگر یورپی معاشروں کی طرح ہمارے ہاں بھی ایک با معنی مُکالمہ شرُوع ہوسکے گا

جی بالکل آپ نے درست فرمایا ۔ آرٹ اور ادب کی بنیاد میں ایک حساس روح مشاہدہ ریاضت آگہی کا عذاب تو مشترک ہوتا ہے۔ پھر کسی مقام پہ مکالمہ اور مزاحمت بھی۔

بندر ،مرغ، انسان  اور بکروں کے کرداروں سے مزین جمال شاہ کی پینٹنگ کی یہ سیریز جہاں اپنے موضوع ، سٹروکس اور رنگوں کے انتخاب میں عمدہ ہے وہیں یہ پینٹنگز علامتی انداز میں کئی کہانیاں سناتی ہیں۔

مرغا بنے نیوڈ  انسان راج کرتے بندر مغرور مرغ اور بکرے کی علامات میں کافکائیت کا رنگ تو غالب ہے ہی مگر ان فن پاروں کو ہم سماجی تناظر سے ہٹ کر مکمل طور پہ پرکھ نہیں سکتے۔

صدیوں تک اس ملک کے لوگوں نے غلامی اور جبر سہا۔ یہ جبر ہر طاقت ور اپنے سے کم تر اور کمزور پہ براہ راست منتقل کرتا رہا۔ نو آبادیاتی نظام ختم نہ ہوا بلکہ نئے نو آبادیاتی دور میں داخل ہو گیا۔ جہاں انسان ایک ڈسپوزیبل شے بنا کر رکھا دیا گیا۔

ہمارے سکولوں میں بچوں کو تعلیم کبھی علم او ادب کے فیض کی مانند نہ مل سکی ۔ طلباء کی تضحیک بدنی سزائیں اور مرغا بنانا ماضی قریب کے تعلیمی میں عام تھا ۔ یہ جبر یقینا اب بھی کئی پسماندہ علاقوں میں رائج ہوگا۔

جمال شاہ کے ان فن پاروں میں نیوڈ انسان مرغا بنے دکھائے دیتے ہیں وہ اس سماج کا نسل در نسل چلتا رواج اور جبر ہے جس میں  ارتقاء کا عمل شاطر اور طاقت ور کے لیے ہی ممکن تھا جسے بندر کی صورت میں پیش کیا گیا۔ سادہ لوح اور کمزور طبقات سر نیچا کیے مرغے بنے اپنی درگت سہتے رہے۔ ان مرغا بنے انسانوں کو نیوڈ دکھانے میں یہ علامت بھی کارفرما نظر آتی ہے کہ اس جبر میں انسان خود کو عریاں محسوس کرتا ہوگا۔ جیسے میٹا مارفوسس میں سیمسا کونوں کھدروں تاریک جگہوں پہ پناہ ڈھونڈتا چھپتا رہا۔ یہ پینٹنگز  ایپوکلپس کی راہ میں ایک احتجاج رقم کرتی نظر آتی ہیں ۔
